Each year on the 2nd Saturday in May, the Letter Carriers hold a nationwide food drive. Estero Post Office is our partner post office. Residents are asked to put a bag of food at their mailbox on Saturday morning. Our volunteers are assigned to pick up food in various neighborhoods. Then we sort, box and store the donations. Estero Church is graciously allowing us to use their fellowship hall to sort the food. This a large project that requires many volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering check in with Kim at 239-267-3510 or email volunteer@ICSLee.org
These are the volunteer shifts available.
- Set up Crew: 9:00am—10:30am
Bring empty boxes from storage to our sorting location. Stage area for weighing and sorting.
- Sorters: 3 Shifts 10:30am—1:00pm. 1:00pm—3:30pm, 3:30pm—6:00pm
Volunteers are needed to help unload food from vehicles, weigh, sort and box by category (vegetables, pastas, soup, peanut butter, etc.) for storage. The 2nd shift is when we need the bulk of our volunteers.
3rd shift is also cleanup crew— sweeping, mopping, cleaning tables, taking out trash, etc.
- Drivers and Helpers: 2 Shifts
10:00am—1:30pm: 15 teams
Each driving team will be provided with a map of a route/neighborhood in Estero. The Helper will grab the bags left at the mailbox and put them into vehicle. When your vehicle is full, or you reach the end of your route, return to the staging location.
- 1:30pm—5:00(ish)pm: 4 Teams
These teams are “on standby” for when Letter Carriers call in with streets we missed and/or extra bags to unload from their vehicle. Also pick up food that has been dropped off at the post office
