Volunteer: Help Update our Computers before tax season!

Have time to share with us? We could use your help.

When tax season is about to start up again, it means our laptops need to be ready to go.  We are looking for volunteers to help go through all our computers, check for and run system updates, clear the browsing history, and ensure the correct links are on the desktop so when the volunteer tax preparers are ready to go their computers are too!

You DO NOT need to have an IT degree for this! Anyone can do it.

Updates normally need to be done before tax training season in December and then again at the beginning of January. Our office hours, where the computers are stored, are Monday through Friday 8-5pm If you can come in at any time during the week, we would love for your help! (We have a lot to do, and just 2 weeks to get it done)!

Volunteer: Be A Community Hero! Be a VITA Tax Volunteer!

United Way Volunteer Center is recruiting volunteers for VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) to serve as tax preparers, greeters, interpreters, and coordinators to provide FREE tax preparation to those in our community who have low to moderate-income. Volunteers assist taxpayers by not only preparing a complete and accurate return and ensuring all eligible credits are claimed; they also save the taxpayer from paying preparation fees--money which can, instead, be used on food, diapers, medical expenses, clothing, daycare, rent, etc.

Previous experience filing taxes is not required, and we provide training. The most important skills to have include:

Ability to work with people  Ability to learn and apply rules and tax law Ability to make decisions and think critically Ability to enter information into tax software Willingness to ask questions Attention to detail

The tax software does most of the math, so there's not a lot of manual calculation that has to happen.

Training is provided - We have in-person and online options.

Our VITA has over 20 sites located throughout Lee, Hendry, Glades, and Charlotte counties, and this year, we will also be in Immokalee!   Each site has its own schedule and hours are flexible! Please join our team and register today!

As an IRS-certified VITA volunteer, you will work alongside amazing community members who, each year, prepare thousands of tax returns in Southwest Florida for very appreciative taxpayers.

Reasons why YOU should become a VITA Volunteer:

"The opportunity to give of myself for the benefit of others is always foremost in my mind however, seeing the results was very rewarding. Folks were appreciative and their lives were favorably impacted. I’m thankful for the VITA program." -Karen B., volunteer.

Volunteer: Fund Distribution Lee 2025

The Fund Distribution Process (formerly known as allocations) is the cornerstone of our United Way. It ensures fiscal and program accountability for all agencies receiving United Way funds while meeting the social services needs of the community. In the process, volunteers challenge each agency's effectiveness at providing services, review the need for programs in the region, and analyze the impact of United Way funding in meeting those needs.

In Lee County, Fund Distribution runs from January through May. Volunteers are assigned a team. Each team meets just twice to discuss the agencies and review their financial documents, application, and performance history. The second time is to visit the agencies and make recommendations.  We have over 30 teams that cover Lee County.

To join a Fund Distribution team and learn more about our partner agencies, contact Angela Fischler at angelaf@unitedwaylee.org

Volunteer: Spanish & Creole Speaking Mentors Needed - You Can Make a Difference!

Children’s Network of Southwest Florida and the United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades partnered almost 8 years ago to create a Family Mentor Program. In the program, Volunteer Mentors connect with parents who are served in child welfare. Mentors provide support and encouragement to help the family be happy, healthy, and whole. By helping support families when they need it most, you can help break generational cycles of abuse, neglect, and poverty — all an hour at a time.

Program Mission
Each Mentor will work to build a committed and trusted relationship with parent(s) to help them define and meet goals to achieve and maintain greater self-reliance to prevent future involvement with the child welfare system.

How Mentors Help
Volunteer Mentors give compassionate, non-judgmental support to work with parents in the following essential areas:

• Social Connection: Helping parents develop social supports;

• Hands-On Assistance: Connecting parents with available benefits and services (such as food stamps, medical resources, free tax filing, etc.);

• Friendly Visitation: Offering a caring and supportive relationship in the spirit of “families helping families” to reduce feelings of isolation; and

• Basic Parenting Assistance: Assisting with parent education by teaching, coaching, and modeling healthy parenting.

If you are new to mentoring, don’t worry. You will receive training on engaging the families, how the
child welfare system works, safety, confidentiality, planning for success, and more. We’re here to help you help families!

Training will cover the areas of Safety, Confidentiality, Planning for Success, Signs, and Reporting of child abuse and neglect, Family Engagement, plus an overview of the Child Welfare System.

Volunteer: Disaster Action Team (DAT) Volunteers Needed!

While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devastating to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people in your community by meeting any immediate needs such as food, shelter, clothing, or supplies and connecting them to long-term recovery services. We supply all the training you need.

If you are team-oriented and want to make a difference, please consider joining your local Red Cross Disaster Action Team! For more information, please contact Colleen at Colleen.Ranier@redcross.org or 561-718-4489. Thank you!

Volunteer: MENTOR MOMS TODAY AND CHANGE A LIFE FOR GOOD!

Creole and Spanish Mentors needed!

• Social Connection: Helping parents develop social supports;

• Hands-On Assistance: Connecting parents with available benefits and services (such as food stamps, medical resources, free tax filing, etc.);

Volunteer: Become a Big Brother or Big Sister Today!

Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things you'll ever do. You can help shape a child's future for the better by empowering them to achieve. And the best part is, it's a lot of fun! You and your Little ones can share the kinds of activities you already like to do.  These children may need a little extra help with schoolwork or maybe just a listening ear to listen and talk things through. There are a variety of ways to be a Big Brother or Big Sister to a Little! Our Bigs enjoy activities with our Littles out in the community, help with homework and school subjects in afterschool programs, and spend time helping in the classroom. Big Brothers Big Sisters has an option to fit your needs, strengths, and schedule.

We will schedule an in-person interview to become a Big Brother or Big Sister with the mentor manager staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast. Subsequently match meetings with the best suited Little Brother or Little Sister and ongoing mentoring sessions will be conducted virtually as well. Mentor managers will be available to provide guidance and assistance to ensure that Bigs are equipped to succeed in mentoring their Littles.

Volunteer: Assist Seniors in Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Facility

Interested in gaining some experience working with seniors who live in a medical environment? The Lodge at Cypress Cove is seeking volunteers in high school to interact with seniors for a multigenerational experience. Many volunteers have an opportunity to work alongside our nurses, nursing assistants, and physical therapists. This experience looks great on resumes and college applications!

Hours are flexible, 7 days a week.  The following is a typical schedule and activities that volunteers assist with.

8:30am: Help pass out the Daily Chronicles and greet residents

9:30am: Assist residents to the morning activity and help to lead the activity.

1:30pm: Assist residents to the morning activity and help to lead the activity

Assisting residents to and from activities includes encouraging the residents to attend, pushing a wheelchair, or walking alongside those who use a walker.

Examples of Activities: Provide manicures, socialize with residents, assist with arts & crafts, BINGO, room-to-room food-related programs, and physical and cognitive activities (beach ball toss, trivia).

Maybe you have a special talent or passion that you could share with our residents. And of course, we love well-behaved dog visits!

To volunteer, email Scott Lindh: slendh@cypressliving.org
